It becomes a routine. You swipe left, swipe right, and acquire your matches.
Now is the time you are supposed to get to know these potential partners, right?
Unfortunately, far too often these matches are left in a deserted pile of
unfulfilled communication. Perhaps it was due to a simple text killer, such as ‘k’ or
‘cool’, that ended the entire conversation. Maybe it was simply due to disinterest in
the conversation at hand.
No matter what the cause, it made me wonder: how many of these failed
connections could have been really great in person? Who have we missed out on
because we didn’t have the chance to get to know the person on the other side of the
Well, it’s time we discuss some tips and tricks on how to best ensure that you
don’t lose out on some great opportunities:
Ask open-ended questions: If it can be answered with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’,
rephrase to encourage longer answers. For example, instead of asking ‘do you like
your job’, rephrase into ‘how do you like your job’. Simple changes can bring forward a much more engaging conversation.
Share music: It is amazing how much conversation can be opened up by
sharing music you enjoy. It brings a deeper level of communication, discussing how
the songs did or didn’t resonate with you and why.
Go off the beaten path: Some matches will have an influx of messages, all
more-or-less the same. These become easy messages to ignore, as they feel
redundant to the person that would be responding. Instead of the standard ‘how is
your day going’, bring up something more original. Even better, integrate something
from their bio to show you care, such as ‘I see you enjoy hiking, have you been on the
local trail here?’
If texting, check your spelling: Easily spotted spelling and grammar errors
are less likely to get a response, especially when there is usually spell-check
providing you with that red underline!
Utilize video: Video allows you to get to know someone in a
three-dimensional way. Immediately, you will get an idea of their personality and
how you two flow in an environment more similar to real-life.
Don’t stall or flake on the conversation: The conversation can only
continue if both people contribute. If you have an interest in getting to know this
person a bit better, don’t leave them hanging for days on end. Life gets busy, I get it,
but that’s true for all of us. We all have to make the effort to some degree.
Fortunately, Chekmate makes this easier for us. By using video, we are
instantly engaging in real conversations with our matches, getting a gauge for who
they are and how you each click. Conversations flow more naturally than they would
over text, and it makes it less likely for someone to ghost in the middle of a topic.
Talk about your interests and passions, share music and photos, and get to
opportunity for a great first date and beyond!
